Trip description

Heliskiing in Iceland – a skiing experience from the peak to the ocean.

Experience a unique heliskiing adventure in the north of Iceland, accompanied by a UIAGM mountain guide - in the heart of the Arctic Circle, where mountains rise directly from the sea. With over 20 years of experience and the facilities of the family-run Klængshóll lodge on the Troll Peninsula, the Arctic Heli Skiing team will take you to virgin slopes with an elevation gain of up to 1500 m. Skiing to the ocean, the midnight sun, the northern lights, hot springs and the magic of the harsh Nordic nature await you.
The season lasts from February to June and is suitable for experienced freeriders and lovers of wide plains. Safety and an individual approach come first.

The UIAGM mountain guide has the highest international license to work in the mountains and has liability insurance.

Arrival day:
Evening arrival in the city of Akureyri in the north of Iceland, followed by a 45-minute transfer to Klængshóll Lodge. There will be a welcome, an initial briefing with the mountain guide, a check of equipment and a shared dinner. In the evening, it is time to rest after the journey and prepare for the following days.

1st day of skiing:
We start the morning with important safety training on avalanche prevention and helicopter movement.
Then we set off for our first day of great skiing in the Arctic wilderness.

Day 2–3 (for a 4-day program)
Days 2–5 (for a 6-day program)

Our experienced guides set the pace and route according to the conditions and abilities of the group. Every day after skiing we return to the comfort of Klængshóll Lodge – relax in the hot tub, sauna, or treat ourselves to a massage. In the evening we are treated to a delicious dinner made from local ingredients –
lamb, fish or venison from the chef.

Last day of skiing and departure:
After breakfast we head out for our last ski trip. We will have lunch in the field during the day. Upon our return we will enjoy a final wellness session, say goodbye to our team and friends and then transfer back to Akureyri. From there you can continue by flight to Reykjavík or extend your stay in Iceland.

The Classic package includes 4 flight hours for the 4-day program and 6 hours for the 6-day program, while the Premium package offers 5 and 7 hours. The Premium package is ideal for groups of eight skiers and ensures that a maximum of two groups of four guests share one helicopter. The Classic package allows up to three groups of four skiers to share one helicopter; however, the guides coordinate the day so that guests do not have to wait unnecessarily.

Yes! We do not discriminate between friends on the same board. Although all guides ski, they are used to guiding snowboarders and choose suitable terrain (no long flats). However, please note that our selection of snowboards is limited, so we recommend that snowboarders contact us in advance
contacted about equipment.

The weather can be rough in the high Arctic, but don’t worry – we’ve got activities for your “rest days”. You can visit the Mývatn nature reserve with its volcanoes, hot springs and mud pools, discover the local culture, bathe in the geothermal spa or visit the local microbrewery (our favourite activity). If you end up skiing all day on the Troll Peninsula, you’ll want to come back for these experiences too. Plus, with endless daylight, you can wait for the weather to improve; even if it doesn’t clear up until around 6pm, you’ll still be able to get in plenty of runs as the sun doesn’t set until around midnight.

You can, but we have a fleet of Völkl performance skis on site that we recommend trying out. Be sure to bring your own ski boots, preferably in your carry-on luggage. Wider skis (mid-fat to fat) with more stiffness are ideal for the local conditions. Get your skis waxed on warmer snow before you go. There is a repair and waxing service available at the chalet to avoid “no wax” problems.

Yes, and it's one of the highlights of the program. There are runs with an elevation gain of around 1,000 meters (3,000 feet) where a helicopter picks up skiers directly on the coast. However, this always depends on the current snow and weather conditions.
There are many reasons. In addition to the details on the “Why AHS” page, look forward to: an adventure of a lifetime; the ability to ski from the peak to the ocean; the closest heliskiing destination on both sides of the Atlantic; exclusive packages with a maximum of 16 guests per week; skiing under the midnight sun;
the only certified UIAGM-IFMGA mountain guides in Iceland with over 20 years of experience; Canadian pilots and guides; unique culture and landscape; first descents, volcanoes, hot springs and great food.
The snow cover is mainly coastal. In the spring (March-April) we ski in powder, in May and June in good quality firn, with occasional powder until May. The small temperature differences between day and night create perfect firn - it is never too deep or hard.
Stable snow means less avalanche risk, so we can ski on steeper and more exposed slopes. In addition, the high-quality firn in the second half of the season allows heliskiing even for skiers who would otherwise be afraid of deep powder. The only certified UIAGM-IFMGA mountain guides in Iceland with over 20 years of experience; Canadian pilots and guides; unique culture and landscape; first runs, volcanoes, hot springs and great food.
The Troll Peninsula is a skier’s paradise – around 90 % of the mountains are skiable, so there aren’t many rock faces or flat sections. You’ll find a mix of steep gullies and walls, as well as wide, gently sloping glacier slopes. The unique feature is the possibility of skiing down 1,300 m of elevation difference to the sea. The terrain offers something for everyone – extreme runs for professionals and friendly sections for heliskiing beginners. The mountains reach heights of up to 1,500 m (5,000 ft) and you can often ski down the entire difference to the ocean; the average heli-run has an elevation gain of around 900 m (3,000 ft). Due to its northern location, there are no forests – a local joke goes that if you get lost in an Icelandic forest, all you have to do is stand up. So if you’re afraid of tree holes, Iceland is safe.
