Iceland: Skialp and “Heli-assisted” skialp on Troll Peninsula

Event details Difficulty Event type Date Event description Ski and Heli-assisted ski on the Troll Peninsula Our Karlsá Lodge is located in the middle of the best ski terrain the Troll Peninsula has to offer. It is the only ski in/ski out ski accommodation on the entire peninsula and is located on the impressive east coast overlooking the Eyja fjord and the Golden Coast on the other side. It also offers luxurious ski and splitboard facilities with a hot tub, ocean views, sauna and a great chef who prepares hearty gourmet meals from fresh local ingredients. It is without a doubt the pinnacle of ski and alpine accommodation in the north of Iceland. The area offers a great variety of mountains and slopes for every level - from those looking for steep chutes to those who enjoy long turns on wide open slopes. The choice is almost endless and one could easily spend a lifetime exploring the peaks and valleys here. After each day in the mountains, you can soak your tired but satisfied feet in one of the many geothermal baths in the region or simply relax in our outdoor spa at Karlsá Lodge. Heli Assisted Skialp/Splitboard You can add a so-called “heli-assist” to a 4- or 6-day skialp program on the Troll Peninsula. These programs take place on the same dates and include the same services as the classic program, but they also include a 60-90 minute helicopter flight to the summit in the morning. You start the day with a long run or two, then hike back up to a second or third run or move on to one of the nearby peaks. This way you can get into terrain that regular skialp groups can’t reach and explore the more remote parts of the Troll Peninsula. If the weather does not allow flying for several days, in some cases it is possible to use the accumulated flight time for one day of heliskiing as soon as the weather improves. A UIAGM mountain guide has the highest international license for working in the mountains and has liability insurance. Iceland Heli-assisted UIAGM guide Price per 1 person. In the evening, a welcome dinner is prepared for the participants. Day 1We will spend the first skiing day on the slopes above the Karlsá Lodge. The morning is dedicated to detailed training in using an avalanche beacon and avalanche rescue training, then the first of many peaks awaits us. For those who feel like it, you can continue as long as your legs allow, because the terrain here is unlimited. Days 2–3 (or 5)The pace and rhythm of the individual days are determined by our mountain guides so that all participants enjoy the program. After a hearty breakfast and packing up, we set off on our final trip. We will enjoy more great descents and good spirits, then have lunch in the field. Iceland: Land of Dragons – Ski Alpine Adventure in the East Fjords of Iceland

Event details Difficulty Event type Date Event description In the legendary eastern fjords of Iceland, where, according to old sagas, dragons defend the coast from foreign invaders, lies an untouched ski mountaineering/splitboarding paradise. Steep snow-covered ridges drop into dark blue fjords, and fishing villages and farm buildings are hidden between them. Each fjord has its own history - this is where ships from Europe arrived after crossing the Atlantic. Bergmenn Mountain Guides pioneered ski mountaineering areas on the Troll Peninsula and during sailing expeditions, and now they invite you to another great adventure full of virgin slopes. The tour is based at the cozy Mjóeyri lodge in Eskifjörður. Every day we will drive to a different fjord to explore as many slopes and mountains as possible under the guidance of our mountain guides. In the afternoon we return to the hut, where a hot coastal whirlpool awaits us and, for the hardier ones, a swim in the sea. Dinner is served in the historic Randulffs Seahouse Museum, a 127-year-old fishing warehouse. This unconventional restaurant is one of the best in Iceland and serves local specialties, such as fresh fish, reindeer meat, pickled herring and the famous Greenland shark. The UIAGM mountain guide has the highest international license for working in the mountains and has liability insurance. Iceland Ski Touring UIAGM Guide Price per 1 person. Date Available Individual date on request I am interested in the event What can you look forward to? Vast plains and slopes Iceland and its breathtaking nature Dinner in the historic seahouse Wellness and hot springs Tour program Arrival dayIn the afternoon you will fly to the airport in Egilsstaðir, where you will meet your guide and drive to Eskifjörður (approximately 50 minutes). You will arrive in Mjóeyri just in time for dinner, prepared by the legendary hosts Berglind and Sævar. They come from a long line of Eastfjords natives, so they know the history and traditions of the region better than anyone. Cottages by the sea await tired travelers. Day 1In the morning, there will be detailed training in working with an avalanche beacon and avalanche rescue. Then, the first of many ascents awaits us; the daily elevation gain usually ranges between 1000–1600 m depending on the composition of the group. Those who want more can continue as long as their legs allow. Day 2–6We will climb peaks on seal belts and discover the great terrain of the Eastfjords. The choice of runs is almost inexhaustible - in each fjord there are several runs from peaks that rise up to 1200 m directly from the sea. After a day of skiing, we will visit small fishing villages with geothermal pools, a cold beer or a good coffee in a local bar. The East Fjords are still little explored by ski mountaineers and splitboarders, so there are plenty of untouched slopes for the brave skier. Day 7The last day is still dedicated to the slopes and snow, but we will also say goodbye to new friends in Mjoeyri. In the evening we will move back to Egilsstaðir and fly to Reykjavík. If you have extra time, it is recommended to rent a car in Egilsstaðir and drive the scenic southern coastal road, or head north through the Lake Mývatn nature reserve and the Trollí Peninsula on the way to the capital. What is/is not included in the price What is included in the price of the tour – Transport: transfer between Egilsstaðir airport and Mjóeyri lodge and all transfers in 4×4 off-road vehicles during the stay. – Accommodation: coastal cottages with double occupancy; single cabin is possible for an additional fee, subject to availability.– Entrance fees: entrance to the municipal swimming pools (not valid for Vök geothermal spas).– Meals: full board from dinner on the first day to lunch on the seventh day; breakfast and packed lunches are prepared in Mjóeyri, dinner is served in the Randulffs Seahouse restaurant.– Guide services: internationally certified mountain guides– Safety equipment: use of rescue and communication equipment, including avalanche equipment. Not included in the price– Transport between Reykjavík and Egilsstaðir before and after the tour.– Rental equipment – skis, boots and other ski touring equipment must be brought by you or rented for a fee.– Alcoholic beverages.– Personal accident insurance. Packing list Clothing - Windbreaker and waterproof outer jacket (e.g. GoreTex). - Waterproof and windproof trousers (GoreTex or similar material). - Softshell or jacket and trousers (optional). - Thermal underwear - top and bottom (wool or synthetic). - Light down or synthetic jacket. - Hat. - Gloves and/or mittens (2 pairs). - Ski socks. - Swimsuit. - Civilian clothing for dinners in the lodge and visits to small towns. - Winter boots are recommended in March-early April, as there is often snow around the lodge. Most alpine ski bindings offer crampon integration; crampons make climbing on hard snow easier and are lightweight and practical. If you don’t have them or can’t find them, contact us – we’ll be happy to recommend a dealer. Do you offer splitboards for rent, or can I use snowshoes? We do not have splitboards for rent and they are difficult to find in Iceland, so you must bring your own. Snowshoes instead of splitboards are not possible unless you have a private program arranged when booking. Can you help me with pre- and post-program travel arrangements? Yes, we can help you with planning your trip or recommend a travel agent in Iceland. Just get in touch. How do I get to Egilsstaðir? Once you arrive in Iceland, you can travel to Egilsstaðir by plane or car. Air Iceland Connect offers two daily flights from Reykjavík Domestic Airport (about an hour's flight), which is about 45 minutes from Keflavík International Airport. It takes about eight hours to get there by car from Reykjavík. How many skiers are in the group? The minimum number of participants is three. If you are one or two, let us know and we will inform you of available dates. The guest to guide ratio is 8:1; for groups larger than eight people, we can add a second mountain guide.

Arrival day: Evening arrival in the city of Akureyri in the north of Iceland, followed by an approx. 45-minute transfer to Klængshóll Lodge. There will be a welcome, an initial briefing with a mountain guide, a check of equipment and a dinner together. In the evening it is time to rest after the journey and prepare for the following days. 1st day of skiing: In the morning we start with an important training in avalanche prevention safety and movement at the helicopter. Then we set off for the first day full of great skiing in the Arctic wilderness. 2nd–3rd day (for a 4-day program) 2nd–5th day (for a 6-day program) Our experienced guides determine the pace and route according to the conditions and abilities of the group. Every day after skiing we return to the comfort of Klængshóll Lodge - we relax in the jacuzzi, sauna, or treat ourselves to a massage. In the evening we will enjoy a delicious dinner made from local ingredients - lamb, fish or venison from the chef. Last day of skiing and departure: After breakfast we set off for the last skiing. We will have lunch in the terrain during the day. Upon return, we will enjoy one last wellness break, say goodbye to the team and friends, and then transfer back to Akureyri. From there, you can continue your flight to Reykjavík or extend your stay in Iceland. What is the difference between the Classic and Premium programs? The Classic program includes 4 flight hours for the 4-day program and 6 hours for the 6-day program, while the Premium offers 5 and 7 hours. The Premium package is ideal for groups of eight skiers and ensures that a maximum of two groups of four guests share one helicopter. With the Classic package, up to three groups of four skiers can share one helicopter; however, the guides coordinate the day so that guests do not have to wait unnecessarily. Can snowboarders participate in your programs? Yes! We do not discriminate against friends on the same board. Although all guides ski, they are used to guiding snowboarders and choose suitable terrain (no long flats). However, please note that our selection of snowboards is limited, so we recommend that snowboarders contact us in advance about equipment. What happens when the weather is bad? The weather can be unpredictable in the high Arctic, but don’t worry – we’ve got activities for your “rest days”. You can visit the Mývatn nature reserve with its volcanoes, hot springs and mud pools, discover the local culture, take a dip in a geothermal spa or visit a local microbrewery (our favourite). If you end up skiing all day on the Troll Peninsula, you’ll want to come back for these experiences too. Plus, with endless daylight, you can wait for the weather to improve; even if it doesn’t clear up until around 6pm, you’ll still be able to make it to the slopes as the sun doesn’t set until around midnight. Should I bring my own skis? You can, but we have a fleet of high-performance Völkl skis on site that we recommend trying out. Be sure to bring your own ski boots, preferably in your hand luggage. Wider skis (mid-fat to fat) with more stiffness are ideal for the conditions here. Before you go, get your skis waxed for warmer snow. There is a repair and waxing service at the lodge to avoid any “no wax” issues. Can you really ski down to the Arctic Ocean? Yes, and it’s one of the highlights of the program. There are runs with an elevation gain of around 1,000 meters (3,000 feet), where a helicopter picks up skiers right on the coast. However, this always depends on the current snow and weather conditions. Why choose Arctic Heli Skiing? There are many reasons. In addition to the details on the “Why AHS” page, look forward to: an adventure of a lifetime; the opportunity to ski down from the summit to the ocean; the closest heliskiing destination on both sides of the Atlantic; exclusive
